The fight for a fair budget continues!

The constant pressure we put on our elected officials this year has stopped Springfield from passing a budget that would have destroyed home care, child care and countless other human service programs in Illinois—but our fight isn’t over yet. Instead of doing the responsible thing and passing a fair plan for new revenue, legislators passed a budget that stopped state services from shutting down, but will still mean deep cuts.

Holding a banner that read “Do your job – raise income tax now!” eight caregivers and community activists were arrested in the Capitol today in a peaceful protest calling on the General Assembly to stop devastating cuts to home care and child care by passing a tax increase. Over 200 health care and child care workers rallied in support, calling a “quick fix” pension bond sale plan no solution to the budget crisis.

With millions of dollars in cuts to child care and home care on the table, SEIU Healthcare Illinois members are fighting harder than ever to protect our jobs, the care we provide and the people we care for from devastating budget cuts.

Don Moffitt worked alongside Galesburg home care aide Phyllis Clifford on Monday, assisting her consumer with day-to-day activities and chores and getting a firsthand look at a form of critical care in Illinois that is in jeopardy because of the state's $12.4 billion budget crisis and threatened cuts.

SEIU Members Unite to Rally for Quality Care

February 28, 2008—Over 650 health care and child care providers from SEIU Healthcare Illinois & Indiana came together in Springfield to rally for quality care and pass a critical hospital funding bill. The event was the first action taken by the newly formed 90,000-member union representing hospital, long-term care and child care workers and marks our first big win as a new union.

May 20, 2008—Over 250 members and leaders from across the state gathered in Springfield on Tuesday to make sure our elected officials prioritize working families in the 2009 budget. Following a march to the Capitol, we met with members of the Illinois House and Senate to explain the need for full funding of the services our consumers and families depend on.
