Our Hard Work Pays Off: Obama Emerges as Democratic Nominee
After months of health care, long-term care and child care workers knocking on doors, making phone calls and spreading the word among voters, Senator Barack Obama has emerged as the Democratic nominee for president. Our hard work paid off, but the fight is just beginning.
For three weeks members and staff took to the streets in Gary and Indianapolis, Indiana, to knock on doors, hand out fliers ad make sure that no one missed their opportunity to vote for the country’s next president. Our efforts contributed to the highest voter turnout in Indiana in years and helped to propel Obama toward the democratic nomination.
“Knocking on doors for the primary was such a positive experience,” explained home care provider and SEIU member Norene Brown who spent the day in Gary. “I felt it was important to go because this is the year for real change. I think people really recognize that we need health care, better wages and someone in the White House who will listen to the working people. Everyone I spoke to was supportive and excited about history in the making.”
Although our work in Indiana was successful, the real battle is still ahead of us. Members and staff are committed to ramping up our efforts and talking with fellow voters in neighboring states. The months before the November election will be a critical time to make sure voters know which candidate is committed to working families and securing affordable, quality health care for all.
